Found this really interesting, thanks. I'm particularly interested in how serial storytelling has shifted from one medium to another over the decades, as I write weekly serial fiction myself and publish here on Substack. It's something that doesn't really exist in traditional literature publishing, outside of some niche genre magazines.

After the serials you talk about here, you had TV and comics, and there always seems to be an appetite for the pacing of a serial. It's odd therefore that some mediums have simply abandoned it as a form. Though, I suppose the massive popularity of the Marvel films shows that there's still broad appeal for on-going serial fiction (albeit with rather higher production values).

Thanks for the comment, Simon. Serial storytelling is fascinating to me. I would also add video games to the list of shared mediums. Before they shutdown, I was a big fan of Telltale Games for their serialized nature. Each game was originally released as a chapter usually ending on a cliffhanger. Writing and releasing a serial on substack would fun for me to experiment with. Lots of writers on here seem to have found success. Appreciate the comment and glad you enjoyed this post.

Love this overview. Have you also listened to the original Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy radio series?
